LUDINGTON, Mich. — A man about to step foot inside the Mason County courthouse slipped away from the deputy transporting him there for a hearing Wednesday afternoon.
The Mason County Sheriff's Office said the 26-year-old man was supposed to appear in court in connection to a breaking and entering case.
But as the man was taken out of the patrol car and into the courthouse parking lot, he took off from the deputy just after 2:20 p.m.
The man had handcuffs that were attached to a chain around his waist but he was able to run away from the deputy.
The deputy called in reinforcements, which resulted in a large police response from the Ludington Police Department, Michigan State Police, Scottville Police and other Mason County deputies.
The sheriff's office used a drone and multiple K9s to track him down.
Just after 2:45 p.m., authorities found the man hiding behind a garage near the old Foster Elementary School.
