HANCOCK, Mich. — Law enforcement in an Upper Peninsula community said an 80-year-old man putting up a political sign in his yard Sunday was run over.
Authorities think it was politically motivated.
Both the Hancock Police Department and the Houghton County Sheriff's Office were investigating incidents involving an ATV on Sunday, July 21.
Police said that the ATV rider appeared to intentionally run over a man putting a Trump sign in his yard. The man was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, police said.
Detectives said others targeted included people who displayed Trump election signs as well as "thin blue line" material.
On Sunday, city and county law enforcement received a call from the 22-year-old. He was calling from Quincy Township, and said he wanted to "confess a crime involving an ATV driver within the last 24 hours," and to "send someone to pick me up."
Officers and deputies found the man dead inside, and it appeared he took his own life.
Using a search warrant, they recovered the four-wheeler that was used during the incident.
Authorities said there is no further threat to the public.
