'He really should have been in jail' | Oceana Co. Sheriff talks about Monday morning standoff

Due to law enforcement's prior "violent" experiences with the suspect, Mast said they called in the SWAT team from Mason County to help.

OCEANA COUNTY, Mich — Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that a man who was arrested early Monday morning after a standoff with police is "well-known" to local authorities.

It all started around 2:30 a.m. on Monday when a man showed up at the hospital in Shelby with a "severe" cut on his neck.

Mast said that the man told a story to hospital staff that they believed to be fabricated. When the man was questioned by deputies he said he had been assaulted by an associate of his at his home in Downtown Shelby.

When the man told deputies the name of his assailant, they recognized it right away.

"We are familiar with the suspect," said Mast. "He was out on bond. He really should have been in jail. But he was released on bond for whatever reason."

Mast said he was told by hospital staff that if the victim's neck injury had been any worse it could have killed him.

Due to law enforcement's prior "violent" experiences with the suspect, Mast said they called in the SWAT team from Mason County to help in surrounding the suspect's home.

"We called the suspect out, he came out a couple times," said Mast. "When he did, he was threatening."

Mast said the suspect kept coming out of the home with knives and retreating back inside.

"We gave him a little bit of encouragement," said Mast. "He did then come out of the house with two other gentlemen."

The suspect and one of the two other men were arrested around 8:00 a.m. Mast said nobody was injured besides the initial victim.

Mast also said the prosecuting attorney plans on asking for a very high bond in hopes of keeping the suspect in jail this time.

"There is very much due cause here for a high bond," said Mast. "This individual is a dangerous person."

Overall, Mast said the entire incident was handled very smoothly by his team.

"The community was never in danger," said Mast. "We felt it was really under control, and with a little bit of encouragement, the suspect was brought to brought to justice here with no harm. So I'm really pretty happy with today's events."
