Woman charged in murder of ex-boyfriend takes the stand during trial

Muhammad is charged with open murder and faces up to life in prison if she's convicted.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A murder trial in Kent County for a Wyoming woman continued Thursday when she took the stand and testified in front of the jury.

Sakina Muhammad is charged with shooting and killing her ex-boyfriend, Kwan Winston. Her attorneys claim it was an act of self-defense, but prosecutors have charged her with murder.

Investigators say Muhammad shot and killed Winston in March of last year and then took off with their child.

While Muhammad claimed she shot Winston in self-defense, neighbors testified the two were in a toxic relationship and she was usually the aggressor.

Muhammad is charged with open murder and faces up to life in prison if she's convicted.
