KENT COUNTY, Mich. — One person is seriously injured after being hit by a deputy's vehicle during a pursuit in Kent County near Division Ave and 32nd Street Monday night.
KCSO says the chase started after a Sheriff's deputy located a stolen vehicle, which they believed was connected to several crimes in Kent County, and attempted to stop the car. The driver did not stop and a brief chase began.
A security camera from a nearby business captured an SUV apparently turning onto Division from 32nd Street. The two suspects then exited the vehicle while it was still in motion.
The vehicle crashed into two parked cars in a used car lot while a deputy's vehicle turned onto Division from the same direction and followed the suspects into the lot as they ran on foot.
KCSO says one of the suspects was hit by the deputy's vehicle and remains hospitalized. The struck suspect sustained serious injuries while the other was arrested.
On Tuesday, KCSO says there were no updates on the suspect's condition.
"One of the neighbors works at the gas station across the street, gave me a call and said that 'there was just an accident at your place,'" said Steve Karrip, owner of Metro Motors where the stolen vehicle crashed into two of his cars that were for sale.
Karrip recalled arriving to his business to see dozens of law enforcement and says he saw many first responders attending to the suspect hit by the deputy's vehicle.
"They were tending to him," said Karrip. "There was a bunch of people around him taking care of him."
Karrip says he is glad there were no other injuries and no bystanders that were hurt.
"There's people that walk their dogs and walk the kids, you know, all the time up and down the avenue here, so I'm glad that nothing else happened," said Karrip.
"This is a good area. There's a lot of good things that happen here. There's a lot of good businesses, there's a good association of businesses, people take care of their places, they've been here a long time."
13 ON YOUR SIDE reached out to Holland Department of Public Safety to confirm if this incident is connected to a pursuit that began in Holland on Monday.
HDPS said Holland officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Waverly Road but the suspect fled. It resulted in officers pursuing the vehicle until I-196 near Hudsonville. Kent County agencies were then notified of the incident and vehicle description.
HDPS says the vehicle was later determined to be stolen.
The incident remains under investigation by Michigan State Police.
