GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Someone fatally shot a young man Monday afternoon within blocks of where a man and a woman were found dead earlier in the day.
The Grand Rapids Police Department said they're investigating this fatal shooting in the 2000 block of Horton Avenue Southeast. Officers were sent to the area to respond to a call for shots fired around 3:55 p.m. just five or six doors down from where another person was found dead earlier in the day.
Police said they can't yet say with certainty if this shooting death is connected to the two people found dead in the same neighborhood earlier Monday.
"It's a very good chance they are connected," GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said. "So the experienced investigator in me says that it's most likely related, but it's possible It isn't. But I'm guessing it is."
The earlier crime scene spans about four blocks just east of Division Avenue SE along the edges of Burton Heights and Garfield Park neighborhoods.
Grand Rapids Police found one person lying in the roadway at Melville Street SE and Horton Avenue SE. A few blocks away, a similar scene at Melville Street Southeast & Francis Avenue Southeast.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said it's too early to tell how they were killed.
"We're going to be extra vigilant tonight moving forward until we have this offender or offenders in custody. This homicide would make the third of today. That's right. Yep. The third of today in this homicide is literally, I don't know, five or six doors down from one of the ones this morning," Winstrom said.
If you have any information that could help authorities, you're urged to call the Grand Rapids Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Silent Observer.
