KENT COUNTY, Mich. — The case against a Kent County man accused of making a false threat to law enforcement at a Walker political rally earlier this year will move forward.
Steven Nauta, 65, underwent a mental competency evaluation to see if he was able to stand trial. A judge found that he was competent to stand trial, and his case was bound over to circuit court.
He faces four charges, including making a false report or threat of terrorism, explosives-possession of bombs with unlawful intent, fleeing a police officer and resisting/obstructing a police officer.
Nauta is accused of driving through a security checkpoint near the Trump rally at FALK Production in September and telling officers that he had C-4 and that it was "the real deal." Court documents claim that he finally stopped for officers, he pulled out bags of fertilizer and threw them on the ground "to make it appear that they were explosives."
After Nauta was detained, he allegedly disobeyed officers' commands when ordered to remain on the ground. Court documents said that he "intended to make officers, and others, believe that he had explosives."
His bond was previously set at $1 million.
