A new $20 million high school is coming to Grand Rapids.
This week leaders at Grand Rapids Public Schools approved the purchase of a 1.7 acre site on the city's southwest side. The school will expand the district's southwest side campus and also include a junior high.
As for the number of students, estimates have the count at around 500.
GRPS says the school will be an exciting addition to Plaza Roosevelt.
"This is the success of the GRPS transformation plan, the last time we closed schools was in 2012, when we closed 10 schools all at once following 20 years of cuts, closures and consolidations, not a single year for 20 years went by where we didn't close 1 or more schools. says Grand Rapids Public Schools spokesman John Helmholdt. "So the fact that here we are getting ready to build a new school and expand this existing school, opening innovative schools that is really symbolic of an urban success story."
The new school will open in the fall of 2020.
