What's next for Grand Rapids Public Schools after voters approved bond

The money will help the district move forward with its "Reimagine GRPS with Us" plan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A day after voters approved a bond proposal, Grand Rapids Public Schools shared what the district will do next.

Their plan is called "Reimagine GRPS with Us."

GRPS Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby said the next steps after the vote include seeing what recommendations school leaders have, hearing what parents have to say, and finally getting approval from the school board.

On Monday, GRPS leadership will present its recommendations to the board of education.

These recommendations will include a list of school closings, consolidating plans and facility improvements.

After a briefing with GRPS staff and feedback from the board, the district will then conduct feedback sessions with parents in different parts of the district, to get a feel of what parents say they want to see.

Leaders say they are focusing on things like updating buildings, improving programs to help students achieve and making sure whatever improvements are made on one side of the city are also made on the other side of the city.

While this plan does include some school closures, Dr. Roby said the approval by voters shows that people are confident the recommended changes are the right ones.

“I think that it speaks very highly of our community, one of the things I have appreciated about the citizens of Grand Rapids, they care about kids, they care about our schools, you all have been here for some of our most impassioned meetings, and it shows that they want our schools to be the very best experiences, and they're willing to take that chance,” said Dr. Roby.

The recommendations still need a final approval from the board, which leaders hope will be given by the end of the school year.

If you are a parent, you can expect to receive more information about when you will get your chance to speak in the coming days.
