Ionia Public Schools closing early and canceling field trips, events due to high heat index

Ionia Public Schools will dismiss students early and plans on canceling a number of events Tuesday due to the heat.

IONIA, Mich. - Administration at Ionia Public Schools say it's too hot.

Ionia Public Schools will close down a number of building early on Tuesday, May 29 due to a high heat index.

The following buildings closed at 11:15 a.m.:

  • Ionia High School
  • Ionia Middle School
  • Douglas R. Welch High School
  • Rather Elementary

The district says that at 12:15 p.m., the following buildings will dismiss their students:

  • Boyce Elementary
  • Emerson Elementary
  • Jefferson Elementary
  • Twin Rivers Elementary

According to a Facebook post from the district, there will be no evening ECSE or Bulldog Beginnings. The Jefferson Kindergarten field trip to the zoo was also canceled Tuesday. Rather's Kindergarten Program and Bulldog Beginnings Graduation was canceled. A makeup date for those events has yet to be determined. Boyce Farm and Garden Club was also canceled.

The Boyce 5th Grade Class Night at the Watt Auditorium is still set to happen at 6:30 p.m. The Watt Auditorium is air conditioned.

Ionia Public Schools says Tuesday's half dat will not impact the end date for the school year. The ast day for all buildings will still be next Wednesday, June 6.
