Nelson Elementary School no longer a state 'bottom 5'

Nelson Elementary is no longer apart of the lowest achieving bottom 5-percent of the state's Priority School's list.

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Education has removed Muskegon's Nelson Elementary School from the Priority School lowest achieving bottom 5 percent designation.

It's means the school no longer has to make Priority School Progress Monitoring Reports.

Priority Schools are in the bottom 5 percent of the statewide Top-to-Bottom School Rankings.

Director of Office of Partnership Districts, Dr. Dedrick Martin, informed Muskegon Superintendent Justin Jennings in a letter stating, “Your hard work and focus on data-driven decisions are promising and have had a positive impact on student achievement outcomes. The MDE remains dedicated to providing your district and schools with support to sustain the efforts that have led you to this point.”

Jennings said Wednesday he's proud of staff and students' hard work. And he pledged to focus now on setting even higher goals.

"We're going to keep moving forward," Jennings said. "Not only at Nelson but as a district, we still have work to do."

Students and staff will celebrate the accomplishment on Wednesday, June 6 with a party for grades kindergarten through sixth-grade.
