GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Inside Dean Transportation on Tuesday afternoon, Dan Moesta was interviewing a job candidate. Moesta was once a truck driver before becoming a transportation manager. These days he's retired, but he still works part time. It seems this is a career he just doesn't want to get away from.
Moesta calls Dean Transportation a great company that he loves. The other thing that keeps him coming back is knowing who his work benefits.
"As a bus driver or bus attendant, you see the kids. You're probably the first positive influence they have every morning. Get to know their names. Get to know them. Get them started on the right track every morning. Then usually, you're their last positive influence at the end of the day a lot of times. Just to have that positive influence on children's lives is very special," he said.
For years, school districts have been working to hire more bus drivers and the worker shortage is still hitting them hard. Leaders from Dean Transportation tell 13 ON YOUR SIDE their Union Avenue facility is looking to hire 30-35 more drivers before the school year begins, so that students with Grand Rapids Public Schools can get to class safely.
With all the training that needs to be done, time is of the essence. Dean is hosting several hiring events in Grand Rapids. Those will be on July 10, 24, and 25 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at two different locations. One is at 900 Union Avenue NE and the other is at 4155 Trade Drive just off of 44th Street.
