Storywalk experience in Ottawa County allows kids to take a hike while enjoying a new book

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Sometimes, when it comes to getting children to read, you have to get creative.

The folks at Loutit District Library in Grand Haven have found a clever way to get children reading this summer.

The program draws young readers through a book where each turn of the page leads to new discoveries.

It’s called Storywalk, and this month it’s happening at Hofma Park on Ferris Street in Grand Haven.

The library has selected a children’s book, taken apart the pages, and posted them on laminated signs along a wooded park trail. It's about a half-mile walk, stroller-friendly, and in a beautiful setting.

This month the book is “Nature Spy Guide” by Shelly Rotner, the perfect selection for this walk through nature.

The Storywalk at Hofma Park is available through the end of June, during park hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Then, in August, the program moves to Connor Bayou with a new book.  It’ll be a one-mile walk on a combination of paved and dirt trails.

The book is “On a Magical Do-Nothing Day” by Beatrice Alemagna.  It’s a story about a boy who’s encouraged to put down his video game controller and get outside … and all the things he discovered on a day when he thought there was “nothing to do.”

Herrick District Library in Holland also does Storywalks.
