It’s no surprise that the high schools with the top SAT scores in the state have some of the most rigorous, college preparatory programs.
Among the top 10 are schools such as the Bloomfield Hills-based International Academy, a school that draws students from across Oakland County. It uses the tough International Baccalaureate Organization curriculum, which is based on world-class standards.
The schools also tend to have wealthier populations than the average school in Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Education today released data from the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, which assessed students in grades 3-8 in English language arts and math, in addition to science and social studies in several grades.

Overall, there was little change in test scores for students in grades 3-8. Statewide, 47% of students were proficient in English language arts in grades 3-8, while 37% were proficient in math. In science, just 24% were proficient, and 30% were proficient in social studies.
The M-STEP also included the SAT. On that exam, the statewide average score was 1001. The top total score on the SAT is 1600; the lowest is 400. The exam covers two subjects, evidence-based reading and writing, and math. The SAT was completely revamped this year to better assess readiness for college and careers. Therefore, scores can't be compared to previous years.
