WHITEHALL, Mich. — Fetch Brewing Company paid off student's lunch debt at Montague Area Public Schools and Whitehall District Schools on Thursday.
Their donation of $5,500 cleared the balances for 675 students, according to Dan Gorman, the food service director.
Gorman said they were inspired by Mitten Brewing Company in Suttons Bay who did the same for Suttons Bay Schools.
Student lunch debt is a challenge every school district around the state has likely run into. "And we try to work with parents however we can," Gorman said.
Some of the outstanding debt was around $10.00 but others were much higher.
The gift cleared every debt, no matter how small or large.
"It's a great thing they've done for the community," Gorman said.
Parents will receive a letter this week explaining the gift. Those who wish to can still pay the lunch account debt of their child. That money will go into a fund to help other students during the 2019-2020 school year.
"For us to be able to do this is a reflection of the community itself," said Jen Hain, Fetch Brewing Company Co-Owner. "The only reason we can do this is because people are supporting us."
Jen and her husband Dan Hain opened Fetch Brewing nearly five-years ago.
The Hain's say not only did they wanted to brew beer, but they also wanted to contribute to the spirit of community they felt in the White Lake area.
"It's a great community, everybody just comes together," Jen said.
"We have a cycling group, we have a running group, we have a knitting group," Dan added.
The Hain's believe their act will spark others, and possibly another Michigan brewery to make their own unique and bold random act of kindness.
"It doesn't have to be the same exact thing," Dan said.
