Former EGR dive coach gets prison for sex crimes
Donald Glass sentenced to between 8 and 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting student

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) – A former diving coach at East Grand Rapids High School will spend 8 to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a student and taking sexually explicit photos of the girl during a two-year relationship.

Donald Richard Glass, 35, was sentenced Tuesday in Kent County Circuit Court for first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He received a 5 to 20-year term for accosting a child for immoral purposes. The two sentences will run concurrent.

In addition to prison, Judge Paul Sullivan ordered that Glass spend the rest of his life on electronic monitoring once he is released from prison.

Glass pleaded guilty to the two charges on July 23. In exchange for the pleas, the Kent County Prosecutor's Office agreed to drop five other charges involving the same girl.

The assaults took place at motels in Michigan and out-of-state, at two homes in Grand Rapids and at East Grand Rapids High School, court documents show.

Michigan State Police seized numerous sexually-suggestive items from Glass's home, including a schoolgirl costume, fantasy lingerie and a 'Frisky' box for fur/leather restraints, according to a search warrant inventory of items taken from his house on Ethel Street SE.

The victim told investigators Glass took sexually explicit photos of her on his cell phone starting when she was 15 or 16 years old.

He met the girl while serving as head coach for the Grand Rapids Diving Club, where she had been a member since middle school. The victim, now 19, said Glass told her to tell others she was a college student if anyone asked about the relationship, court records show.

Glass at the time was the boys' diving coach at East Grand Rapids High School, the girls' diving coach at Forest Hills Central High School and the head coach/club director for Grand Rapids Diving Club.

At Grand Rapids Diving Club, Glass offered to give her private lessons for free starting when she was about 13 or 14 years old, according to a probable cause affidavit in Grand Rapids District Court.

After the girl turned 15, Glass had sex with her multiple times at multiple locations up until March, 2015, court records show.

In February, Glass met the victim at a hotel in Indiana to celebrate Valentine's Day, court records show. While at the hotel, Glass told the victim he had a surprise for her and produced a bottle of wine and a box containing a blonde wig, a skirt and blouse, a feather on a stick, a blindfold, vibrator and handcuffs, a probable cause affidavit states.

He used the items while performing sexual acts on the victim while she was intoxicated, court records show.

Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Denise Bentley met with the victim at her parent's home in East Grand Rapids after she contacted police in April.
