GRANDVILLE, Mich. — Leaders in Grandville say they oppose a proposed project relating to the Grand River.
The Grand River Waterway project would span a 23-mile stretch from Grand Rapids to Eastmanville in Ottawa County.
Supporters of the project say dredging the river would make it accessible to power boats and boost tourism.
One of the major concerns from critics is the environment. Studies have shown that dredging can have a negative affect on wildlife.
Grandville's Mayor Steve Maas understands why people are so passionate.
"We all love the Grand River and we want to take care of it. So I think that's why feelings are so strong when it comes to proposed changes to the Grand River," said Maas.
And even though Grandville does not have jurisdiction over the project, the city council did take action Monday night. They passed a resolution opposing the dredging of the Grand River. The resolution passed by a vote of 4 to 2.
