GRPD releases dash cam video of arrest where use of force is under question

The department released the in-car video of a traffic stop that resulted in an arrest, though the use of force by the officer is under question.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Police Department released in-car video a recent traffic stops that resulted in a 'forceful arrest' that's now under investigation.

Interim Chief David Kiddle held a press conference on March 26 where he said an officer was bitten during a struggle with several suspects following a report of a fight in the 100 block of Labelle Street on March 25.

One of the male passengers in the vehicle had an outstanding arrest warrant and refused to exit the vehicle with his hands in view, according to a release from the police department.

The man was forced out of the vehicle and resisted the officer's attempts to place him into custody. Both men fell to the ground, and the man began to scratch at the officer's face, neck and throat. The man also attempted to gain access to the officer's firearm and bit the officer on his tricep, the release went on to say.

Several people attempted to interfere with the officer attempting to arrest the man, as seen in the video. GRPD says the second officer split his attention between his partner fighting and keeping others away.

The primary officer and the individual had minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

Tuesday, GRPD released body cam footage of this arrest as well as another one that gained attention for use of force. In that incident from March 17, and video footage was taken by a neighbor showing the officer punching the man who was pulled over in a traffic stop near National Avenue NW and California Street NW because police said he was speeding.

Both arrests are being reviewed by the internal affairs unit, labor relations department and the Chief of Police for the amount of force used in both.
