GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Saturday morning, the Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education decided to shift their search for a superintendent.
The board had narrowed the search down to two candidates: Devon Horton and Adrian Talley. However, during Saturday's meeting, the board decided not to pursue either candidate.
"They are qualified in their right," said Kristian Grant, the board president. "When I look at what is qualified for our district, though, those standards may differ."
The board members shared their thoughts about the superintendent search process and the two remaining candidates before taking a vote.
"There were strong responses that 'I don't feel like either of these candidates is the person," said Grant.
Trustee Katherine Downes Lewis presented the motion that the board take a step back from Horton and Talley and look for other options.
The board approved this decision in a 6-3 vote.
The current superintendent, Teresa Weatherall-Neal is retiring at the end of June. The board decided to work toward appointing an interim superintendent while they continue the search for a permanent person.
