MICHIGAN, USA — Here is the latest information on the coronavirus in Michigan, including the number of cases state offices report and other updates affecting West Michigan.
Wednesday's cases
The state of Michigan reported 94,278 total confirmed cases and 6,349 total deaths Wednesday. 616 cases are new today along with nine deaths.
The numbers are from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The latest data on recoveries is from Friday, Aug. 14. It shows that 67,778 people have recovered from the virus. The state updates this data every Saturday. A recovery is counted as anyone who is 30 days out from the onset of their symptoms.
Hospitalizations are declining. There are 659 suspected/confirmed COVID-19 patients in Michigan hospitals, 80 on ventilators, and 169 in critical care as of Aug. 18.
Michigan is reporting the number of cases at long term care facilities. That data can be seen here.
$65 million in funding to be given to Michigan school districts
$65 million is being given to schools in Michigan through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Wednesday.
The funds will be allocated to Michigan schools districts and higher education institutions, including schools in the state’s economically disadvantaged districts, Whitmer said. This will help address the digital divide that has created a barrier to remote learning for students state-wide.
The announcement was made at a press briefing Wednesday in Lansing.
