MICHIGAN, USA — Here is the latest information on the coronavirus in Michigan, including the number of cases state offices report and other updates affecting West Michigan.

Sunday's cases

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 1,041 cases of COVID-19 Sunday, which is the first time the daily case count exceeded 1,000 since mid-May. However the state says the number of cases is higher Sunday because of a delay in the reporting system.

"Messaging system issues resulted in the delay of laboratory result referrals from Friday evening through Saturday morning. The issue has been resolved and the back-logged referrals have been processed," the health department said.

There were zero deaths recorded Sunday; the cumulative death toll is 6,149.

See cumulative data here.

Saturday, the data was posted late, and the state noted that there were "manual data entry errors," which led to the cumulative death count to drop by 16. The total number of deaths is now 6,149.

The state said the errors occurred during investigations of local cases that were "mistakenly indicating individuals as being deceased who were not." The state says reviews are being conducted to ensure data quality and death reporting.

The latest data on recoveries is from Friday, July 24. It shows that 57,502 people have recovered from the virus. The state updates this data every Saturday. A recovery is counted as anyone who is 30 days out from the onset of their symptoms.

Hospitalizations are fluctuating. There are 481 COVID-19 patients in Michigan hospitals, 113 on ventilators, and 197 in critical care as of July 24.

Michigan is reporting the number of cases at long term care facilities. That data can be seen here.

Saturday's cases

The daily data update was delayed "due to technical issues " the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said Saturday afternoon.

There were 437 daily cases recorded, making the total 76,978. There were 14 daily deaths recorded, but eight of those came from a review of death certificate data.

State recommendations for COVID-19

People with COVID-19 have reported a wide range of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe illnesses. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus, according to the CDC. The symptoms include:

  • If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19, call your health care provider. If you do not have a health care provider, call the nearest hospital.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If not available, use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or upper sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.
