Coronavirus updates, Oct. 27: 2,367 daily cases, 28 deaths

Here are the live updates for Tuesday, Oct. 27.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Here is the latest information on the coronavirus in Michigan, including the number of cases state offices report and other updates affecting West Michigan.

Tuesday's cases

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 2,367 daily cases of coronavirus, making the total 164,274. 

There were 28 deaths recorded, with eight being from a review of death certificate data. The death toll has reached 7,239.

The latest data on recoveries is from Friday, Oct. 23. It shows that 114,939 people have recovered from the virus. The state updates this data every Saturday. A recovery is counted as anyone who is 30 days out from the onset of their symptoms.  

Hospitalizations are rising this week. There are 1,479 suspected/confirmed COVID-19 adult patients in Michigan hospitals, 140 patients on ventilators as of Oct. 26.

DHD#10 announces first COVID-19 death in Lake County

District Health Department #10 (DHD#10) revealed Tuesday the first death from COVID-19 in Lake County.

According to DHD#10, the deceased was a woman in her 80’s. She died on Monday, Oct. 26 after testing positive for the virus.

“We are saddened to learn of this death and wish to convey our deepest sympathies to the family who lost their loved one,” said Kevin Hughes, DHD#10 Health Officer. “We continue to urge the public to be vigilant in preventing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing a proper face covering, social distancing, avoiding touching your face, and washing your hands often.”

Calhoun County Jail reports outbreak in unit that houses ICE detainees

Calhoun County Jail is reporting an outbreak of COVID-19 cases, with 24 inmates testing positive. 

A spokesperson for the county said that the outbreak is limited to two pods, which are in an area of the jail which primarily house ICE detainees. Calhoun County Jail works with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a detention facility.

All of the positive cases and their close contacts are quarantined. The county says most of the individuals are asymptomatic, and two are in a medical unit with mild symptoms. Calhoun County Jail is cleaning the affected units by following protocols recommended by the CDC.

Sunday & Monday cases

The Michigan Department and Health and Human Services reported 3,881 cases from Sunday and Monday. The total number of cases is now 161,907.

There were 29 deaths recorded from Sunday and Monday. The death toll has reached 7,211.

State recommendations for COVID-19

People with COVID-19 have reported a wide range of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe illnesses. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus, according to the CDC. The symptoms include:

  • Fever  
  • Cough  
  • Shortness of breath 
  • Chills
  • Repeated shaking with chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea 

*Note: This list does not include all possible symptoms. It will be updated as the CDC and health officials learn more about the virus. 

The best prevention for viruses, such as influenza, the common cold or COVID-19 is to:  

  • If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19, call your health care provider. If you do not have a health care provider, call the nearest hospital.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If not available, use hand sanitizer. 
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.     
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or upper sleeve when coughing or sneezing.    
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.    
  • If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.    
  • Stay at least 6 feet away from others when in a public setting.
