GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Winter can wreak havoc on our skin, leaving it dry, itchy and flaky.
While skin issues can be annoying, it can also lead to more serious consequences.
"It can be disruptive to sleep, number one," said Dr. Douglas Winstanley, a dermatologist at West Michigan Dermatology. "If people are scratching and causing small abrasions or micro cuts in their skin, they are portals for infection."
The biggest thing he suggests is to avoid over-washing skin.
"A lot of people use soap and a washcloth," said Winstanley. "And really, what you're doing, is you're both chemically stripping oil from your skin by using harsh soaps, especially like the deodorant and antibacterial soaps. And then if you're using a washcloth, or loofah, you're mechanically removing that oil from your skin."
He says you should moisturize within ten minutes of getting out of the shower or bath to lock in moisture.
When choosing a moisturizer, use a lotion or cream that is bland, without dyes or perfumes. Those can cause a reaction when used on dry, flaky skin.
"Really, one of the best moisturizers is just plain petroleum jelly," said Winstanley. "But people don't like that greasy feeling."
Other ways to help dry skin include sleeping with a humidifier in the room and drinking plenty of water.
"There are medicated lotions that are available over the counter, products that contain lactic acid that can be helpful, particularly if your skin is really dry," said Winstanley. "Lactic acid helps to break down some of that thicker, scaly skin."
If big breakouts or other issues with dry skin continue, talk to a dermatologist to see if it might have developed into something more serious.
