GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids hospital is being recognized for its security department.
Trinity Health Grand Rapids' security department has earned a Program of Distinction with The International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS). This is the first hospital in West Michigan to receive the honor, and the second in the state.
"We typically send out patient surveys, and those surveys don't actually specifically inquire anything about security," said David Kiddle, the director of security and emergency preparedness at Trinity Health Grand Rapids. "But I tell you, it is very routine that they make mention of the service provided by security. So, we really hold that close to our hearts, and that really tells me that our officers are making impact every single day. That doesn't happen without good training, a great culture, and then that true passion for the work we do."
To be considered for the distinction, at least 70% of security officer must hold a certification with IAHSS.
Trinity Health Grand Rapids also received an "A" rating for hospital safety with The Leapfrog Group for 2024.
"We're living in a time where human civility has deteriorated and there is an increase of inappropriate behavior, not only in healthcare, but everywhere," said Kiddle. "We see it, every night, on the evening news, airplanes, retail locations, restaurants, etc. And unfortunately, this leads to the need for a professional and qualified security workforce that I think is appropriately trained to deal with a variety of situations."
