GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Teresa Robinson said it was about seven and a half years ago when she was left paralyzed in her legs after she was the victim of a drive-by shooting that killed her step-grandson and almost claimed the life of her daughter.
"If I didn't stand up, it'd probably have killed my daughter when he was shooting, because I stood up to push her down, you know, to get down," Robinson said. "And that's when I got shot."
All the while, she said her mother is now battling lung cancer.
"She wasn't just my mom," Robinson said. "My mom was my best friend."
It's a battle Robinson said, tragically, her mother likely won't win.
"I cried and told her, 'You can't- you can't leave me, not until I see you, mom. You can't do this until I hold your hand. You can't. You can't,'" Robinson said. "And my mom told me she wasn't going anywhere until she seen me."
With her challenges, Robinson was left wondering how she would be able to travel to see her mom one last time.
"I got this big old wheelchair," Robinson said. "You can't get that up the stairs."
"I went on Facebook and asked for any suggestions or any way that I can get some help to go see my mom," Robinson said.
That is until ambulance service Life EMS heard her story and gave her a ride.
"And Leon [Hendrix] said, 'I'm going to get you some help,'" Robinson said. "And he did. And I'm gonna go get to see my mother and love all on her"
In the end, Robinson was gifted the chance many never get: saying one last goodbye to her mom.
"I thank God that I was able to get some help," Robinson said.
