Free contraception now available at hundreds of locations in Michigan

There are participating health centers, health departments and MDHHS offices in every county. Supplies will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

MICHIGAN, USA — Michiganders are now able to access free contraception in November through a statewide program called Take Control of Your Birth Control.

The program offers over-the-counter oral birth control pills, emergency contraception, condoms and family planning resources—all for free. You do not need to provide insurance to receive these resources.

Take Control of Your Birth Control was first announced in October. Over 300 locations in Michigan are now participating to help make birth control more accessible.

“Everyone deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their reproductive health,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “With over 300 locations across Michigan now offering free birth control, emergency contraception, and other essential reproductive health tools, we are taking action to ensure that all Michiganders have the support they need. Decisions about reproductive health care should be between a woman, her doctor, and her trusted community. In Michigan, we must always protect your fundamental right to control your health and your future.”

If you're interested in taking advantage of the program, you can find a location here. There are participating health centers, health departments and MDHHS offices in every county. Supplies will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Along with contraception, Michiganders can learn more about applying for Medicaid and how to get contraception covered in the future.

“The goal of this program is to ensure individuals, regardless of their circumstances, have access to tools that allow them to make their own decisions about their health and future,” said Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian. “We appreciate the overwhelming support we have received from organizations willing to help distribute free contraception resources to individuals. We want to make sure individuals who need and want these tools can easily obtain them. This campaign reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to ensuring equitable access to reproductive health services.”

The program is being funded through the state's bipartisan budget. $5.6 million of the budget was reserved for the MDHHS to expand its family planning program.
