GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is opening up a new medical psychiatric unit this spring that aims to treat pediatric patients who have additional medical complexities.
The health network said this specialized unit will be the first of its kind in Michigan.
Located within Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, the 12-bed unit will offer patients care from a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, medical physicians, social workers, child life specialists, nurses, chaplains and pharmacists.
“There is a critical need for behavioral health services nationwide, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this exceptional service to the pediatric patients in Michigan,” Subodh Jain, M.D., vice president and department chief, behavioral health, Corewell Health said. “In addition to enhancing collaboration with our community partners, this new unit will provide a better experience for both patients and team members.”
The unit is supported by $5 million from the State of Michigan and an additional $4 million in community donations.
“The medical psychiatric unit will be pivotal in how we care for kids and we’re grateful for the support in this endeavor,” said Robert Fitzgerald, M.D., president, Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

Last summer, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services announced a 40-bed expansion to the Pediatric Behavioral Health Center to help address children's mental health.
The Pediatric Behavioral Health Center, which is being built through a partnership with the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, is expected to open in late 2025 or early 2026.
