How to manage holiday expectation stress

Dr. Treg Thomas, a clinical psychologist with Corewell Health, says to focus on what you value most and set boundaries around them.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — There are so many obligations and events around the end of the year. It can be easy to become stressed.

Dr. Treg Thomas, a clinical psychologist with Corewell Health, says to manage that stress, focus on what is most valued.

"It's not that you don't do things that you don't value, or that you don't have fun," said Thomas. "But if you put the most energy behind the things you value most, you will likely be more mentally healthy this time of year."

He suggests spending time to find out what those values are. It could be baking, spending time with family, giving gifts, doing charitable activities or more.

When those values are identified, then comes setting boundaries to protect them. That might mean skipping events, especially for kids.

"They're going to be out of their routines this time of year," said Thomas. "And there might be certain things that you say, 'I'm really sorry, we're not going to be able to take part in that.' Just because it's best for the kids right now."

Another huge area of stress during the holidays revolves around giving gifts. However, not every gift needs to be something bought. Thomas says to consider talking with family about setting price limits, not doing gifts, or doing an experience or volunteer opportunity together.

Instead, discover the reason behind gift-giving. Does it bring a sense of fulfillment? Is it the thought to make someone happier? Or is it just about the time spent together?

If the holidays are simply not living up to expectations, that is ok too. Admitting that to yourself can even ease some of the stress.

"You may say to yourself, 'this year is just different.,'" said Thomas, "Even saying something as simple as that for yourself. 'This year is just different.' It can make it feel like maybe it's not as catastrophic as it feels like it is."
