IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — A 28-year-old inmate of the Ionia County Jail escaped on Friday at 2:11 p.m.

The Ionia County Sheriff's Office said that Gabriel Neff ran south away from the jail and headed toward the river trail. He ended up running into the Grand River while being pursued by several correctional officers.

Law enforcement officers from three agencies, including the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, Ionia Public Safety and Troopers from the Michigan State Police all responded to the report and set up a perimeter around Neff.

Neff was chased on foot by police and was taken into custody without further issues at 2:45 p.m. He was transported to the Ionia Sparrow Hospital for injuries related to his exposure while in the Grand River.

Neff was being held at the jail on charges of carjacking, robbery and aggravated assault for an incident in May. The Sheriff's Office will seek additional charges related to Neff's escape.

The escape is currently being investigated.
