Couple gets answers from Zales, UPS after diamond ring stolen from package

West Michigan couple whose diamond ring was stolen out of a UPS package is getting answers after contacting WZZM 13 On Your Side for help.

A West Michigan couple whose diamond ring was stolen out of a UPS package is getting answers after contacting WZZM 13 On Your Side for help.

It was supposed to be a surprise -- and it was.

Rick Storms bought a diamond ring for his wife April. The two have been married for 12 years.

"We both just have this stunned look on your face," said April. "Like really? Serious?"

Rick purchased the $500 dollar ring from Zales. It meant a lot -- due to the fact the couple had been separated and recently got back together.

UPS was set to deliver it on Monday.

Rick, April and their three kids were all here when the package was delivered. They heard a knock on the door. But before any of them could get there, the delivery man was walking down the driveway. Rick didn't get to sign for it, and he says the package was damaged, and he wouldn't have accepted it.

Rick opened the package, even though it was obvious it had been opened before.

When he called Zales to tell them the ring was missing, he says they offered to replace it.

"Zales policy is anything over $100 has to be signed for if you buy it online," said Amy.

The next morning, Rick got an email from Zales.

"All they can do is file a report with UPS, to find the ring," Amy continued. "It was in the box when it left the store."

UPS also said they would open an investigation, but it could take weeks. That's when April called 13 On your Side for help.

"I feel like that moment was taken," she said. "I feel like they should replace that ring without this being publicized even. It shouldn't be like this."

After a few phone calls to both companies, UPS offered to pay for the loss of the ring. April says Zales also offered to send them a new ring before Christmas.

"How Zales and UPS battle out whose loss that is, I don't know," she said. "I don't feel like that should be us."

The On Your Side team did receive confirmation from both companies that they plan to make this right. The couple says they believe the outcome is more than fair.

The Storms also filed a police report. The investigation will continue into what happened to the ring.
