HOLLAND, Mich. — Two people are dead after a chase with Holland police ended in a crash early Sunday morning, according to the Holland Department of Public Safety

Around 2:25 a.m. HDPS said they received a report of several people fighting by the Speedway gas station at 800 Washington Avenue.

When an officer arrived at the scene and began to walk towards the gas station, HDPS said he saw a silver-colored vehicle suddenly leave the parking lot traveling westbound on 33rd Street.

Police said the car was speeding and had its headlights off.

According to HDPS, as the vehicle left they heard multiple gunshots, which they believed came from the vehicle.

The officer then went back to his vehicle to attempt to follow the suspect vehicle.

HDPS said the suspect turned onto Pioneer Avenue and then went westbound onto 32nd. When the officer turned onto westbound 32nd, the suspect vehicle was still speeding with its headlights off.

Police said the suspect vehicle continued driving westbound but lost control of the vehicle west of the city limits as 32nd curves into South Shore Drive.

According to HDPS, the suspect vehicle drove off the road to the left and crashed into a tree. Police said both occupants of the vehicle died in the crash.

Police said other officers responded to 33rd Street after the gunshots were heard. While neighbors reported hearing the gunshots, police said no victims were found.

HDPS said at this time, it's unknown who or what the suspects were shooting at.

Police said the crash investigation has been turned over to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. Holland Detectives were also called in to help investigate.
