LAKE CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Berrien County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) reported a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday on I-94 Eastbound near the 15 mile marker in Lake Charter Township.

According to the initial investigation, one vehicle rear-ended another. One of the drivers, a 69-year-old woman from Iowa, was declared dead at Corewell Health. Officials say there will be an autopsy to determine the exact cause of her death.

BCSO stated the other driver was arrested and taken to Berrien County Jail for driving while intoxicated and causing death. However, they said the charge is just an accusation and the suspect is pending arraignment.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Team is actively investigating and believes alcohol and speed are factors in the crash.
