MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — When we first met Mary Ames of Muskegon, she only had one thing on her mind.
“I just want cable,” she said.
Ames enjoys watching TV, but she only gets a couple of channels. What she really wants is to watch the Detroit Lions games. Watching those games might sound simple, but because of where she lives, she doesn’t have many options — at least not many affordable options.
Earlier this year, Ames requested TV service from Comcast. A company representative responded to Ames stating the service would require “underground and/or aerial construction” in addition to “all of the necessary electronics, such as amplifiers.” The total cost for servicing Ames home came to $3,020, which is more than the retired grandmother can afford. That’s when Ames reached out to the 13 HELP Team.
The original story aired in mid-November, and a man from Spring Lake immediately reached out, saying he’d like to help. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent an email to the HELP Team stating, “I just saw the piece on the woman in Muskegon that loves the Detroit Lions and cannot get cable to her home. I’d like to cover the $3,000 fee to get her cable if that is possible.”
The 13 HELP Team delivered the good news to Ames, who was thrilled.
“Thank you so much,” Ames said. “You don't know how much this means to this grandma.”
The HELP Team is now in the process of making sure the payment goes through, at which point Comcast will send a crew out to Ames neighborhood and get her connected to cable. Once everything is hooked up, Ames said she plans to invite her family to the house for a Lions watch party.
