VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A man wielding a hammer was arrested for breaking into a home in Van Buren County after a confrontation with police, the Sheriff's Office says.
Police were called to the 51000 block of County Road 380 in Columbia Township around 6:30 p.m. Monday on the report of a man trespassing on someone's property.
The man left by the time deputies arrived, but they found evidence someone had been there.
Around two hours later, a neighbor of the first caller told dispatch the man returned to their property. When deputies arrived, they saw the man inside the home through the upper floor window, holding a baseball bat, deputies say.
The suspect closed the blinds after seeing officers.
Deputies spoke to him over the squad car speakers, asking him to exit the home and surrender, but he ignored those commands.
First responders tried to enter the home, but the suspect was holding it closed. The door was forced open, pushing the suspect backwards.
When deputies were inside, they saw the man armed with a hammer, raised above his head. They tried to tase him, but it failed to make contact.
He ran to the back of the house, where he was arrested.
No one was injured in the situation.
The suspect is lodged at the Van Buren County Jail on charges of 3rd degree home invasion and aggravated assault on a police officer.
