Muskegon fire in detached garage under investigation after man is severely burned

The Muskegon Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire Saturday around 11 p.m. in the Lakeside neighborhood.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The Muskegon Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Saturday around 11 p.m. in the 2100 block of Bourdon in the Lakeside neighborhood. 

According to the Muskegon Police Department, responders arrived to find the interior of a detached garage on fire. A 28-year-old man was in the garage when the fire happened but was able to exit the garage before firefighters arrived. 

The man has burns on 95% of his body and was taken to Trinity Health (Mercy) Hospital. Once stabilized, he was flown to a Corewell Health hospital in Grand Rapids for treatment. 

At this time, the department says the victim's condition is unknown. 

Officials say the fire is currently being investigated to determine where it started and the cause.
