ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Mich. — A mother was charged with open murder in the death of her 2-year-old in Sturgis Township on Thursday, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said around 12:50 p.m. they were dispatched to the Memory Lane Trailer Park at 25039 US 12 for an unresponsive 2-year-old in a residence.
When they arrived, deputies attempted to revive the 2-year-old but were unsuccessful. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to SJCSO, due to the circumstances surrounding the child's death, the Major Crime Task Force was activated.
An investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding the child's death, which deputies said led investigators to take the mother of the child into custody for involuntary manslaughter.
SJCSO has identified the child's mother as 21-year-old Paige Nichole Bohne. She has been charged with open murder and denied bond.
Deputies said Bohne is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said he appreciates the responding law enforcement who tried their best to revive the child and recognized the suspicious circumstances.
“The loss of someone is always difficult, but the loss of a child is especially tragic, and it impacts the whole community," Bingaman said.
Support services are being made available to the family and the first responders dealing with the incident.
