GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A 55-year-old woman was crossing 28th Street when she was hit by a vehicle and died from her injuries, according to police.
Grand Rapids police were called to 28th and Eastern Ave SE around 2:10 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day. When they arrived, they say the driver who hit the woman had left the scene.
GRPD said life-saving measures were attempted, but the woman died at the scene. Her identity is being withheld until family is notified.
"There was a loss of life here today," said Captain Terry Dixon of GRPD. "And our prayers go out to the victims or the family of the victims."
Witnesses describe the vehicle that struck the woman as a dark colored mid-sized SUV. GRPD said evidence shows the vehicle is likely a Ford with significant damage to the front end.
The investigation is ongoing by the GRPD Traffic Unit.
