Wyoming garage fire spouts smoke seen from miles away

Nearby houses had siding melted off from the "intense heat of the fire," investigators say.

WYOMING, Mich. — A fully involved garage fire caused significant damage in Wyoming, fire officials confirm.

Fire crews were called to a house near the area of 44th Street and Oriole Avenue SW around 12:15 p.m. on Saturday by neighbors and passersby who saw the flames.

Every evacuated safely and no one was hurt. But the fire was quickly spreading.

The smoke could be seen from miles away. Explosions were likely, as there were tires within the garage, officials say. Crews worked to get it extinguished before that happened.

The fire spread to a Consumers Energy power pole above the garage. Their staff quickly cut power while the fire was being extinguished.

The fire never fully spread to the house next door, but did damage it. Nearby homes had melted siding from the "intense heat of the fire," investigators say.

"Notifying 911 quickly helped Wyoming firefighters get on scene and successfully extinguish the fire and limit damage to nearby properties," said fire investigator Brad Dornbos.

The fire's origin and cause are still under investigation.
