HOLLAND, Mich. — Two people are dead after crashing in their car while running from police in Holland. Officers say someone in the car may also have fired shots.
It started at 2:24 a.m. Sunday morning at the Speedway gas station at 800 Washington Street. That's where police were called for a fight in the parking lot. When officers showed up, two people in a car took off at a high rate of speed with their headlights off. Officers say they also heard shots, which were believed to have come from the vehicle.
Officers began chasing the suspects through the city, who continued to have their headlights turned off. Police say the car was speeding when it lost control on 32nd Avenue where it curves into South Shore Drive on the city's western limits. The car hit a tree, and both people in the car were killed at the crash scene.
Police say they aren't sure who the suspects in the car were shooting at, and they don't believe anyone was hit by gunfire. Police say witnesses along the chase route also heard gunshots coming from the vehicle.
Investigators aren't releasing the names of the two people killed pending family notification.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office is now taking over the investigation.
