GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Yamiche Alcindor used her platform Monday night to inspire.
"We are here and tasked to use our skills and our talents to force this country to be better," says Alcindor.
As part of a MLK Day webinar hosted by Grand Valley State University, Davenport University and Grand Rapids Community College, the PBS News Hour White House correspondent talked at length about the power Dr. King's words still hold today, including after the riot at the U.S. Capitol.
"It all seems so scary," remarked Alcindor. "But in thinking about the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, I'm fortified in knowing that even as we look evil and racism right in the face, we know that we can and will defeat it."
Dr. King's desire for change influenced all the recipients of this year's MLK Scholarships, which were announced during the event. High school senior Areonn Houston earned one of the awards, and shared how King's words inspired her goal to shake up the business world.
"When you think of people in business, you don't really see an African American woman," says Houston. "I want to be that person. I want to be the one to make a change and be different from everyone else."
Monday's webinar is the first of several events hosted by GVSU all week long in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
