1 dead in probable drowning at Ludington State Park

The Mason County Sheriff said some other beachgoers found the person under the water, pulled him to a raft and started CPR. He didn't make it.

LUDINGTON, Mich. — One person has died in an apparent drowning in Lake Michigan Tuesday afternoon at Ludington State Park

The Mason County Sheriff's Office said they responded just before 2 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a person struggling in the water at Ludington State Park. 

Several beachgoers went into the water to help the person, however, by the time they made it to him, the victim slipped under the surface. 

Those Good Samaritans found him under the water, pulled him to a raft and then to shore where they started CPR. 

Later at the hospital, the victim was pronounced dead. 

His name is being withheld pending family notification.

Officers with the Ludington Police Department, Troopers with the Michigan State Police, Ludington State Park Rangers, Hamlin and Ludington Fire along with LIFE EMS all responded to the scene and assisted deputies.
