BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — An 11-year-old Battle Creek boy is in stable but critical condition after a crash on Thursday evening.

The Battle Creek Police Department and Fire Department said they responded to the crash around 7:15 p.m. near the intersection of West Spaulding Avenue and Ashland Avenue.

After interviewing witnesses at the scene, police said they determined the boy was riding a Coleman mini dirt bike northbound on Ashland Avenue and turned to travel eastbound on West Spaulding Avenue.

Police said witnesses told them once the boy was on Spaulding, he was hit by a 2003 Ford F250 driven by a 41-year-old Battle Creek man who was also traveling eastbound on Spaulding.

According to police, one of the witnesses said they watched the boy ride his bike onto West Spaulding Avenue, disregarding the yield sign for his direction of travel and turning directly into the path of the truck. The truck wasn't able to stop before hitting the boy, witnesses said.

Officials said crews gave CPR to the boy at the scene because he was in cardiac arrest with serious injuries.

The boy was resuscitated and taken to a local hospital, where police said as of Friday evening he was in stable but critical condition.

The incident is still under investigation by the Battle Creek Police Department.
