Highway pile-up shuts down US-131 during winter storm

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A multi-vehicle crash closed US-131 northbound between 28th Street and Burton Avenue late Thursday night.

The crash, which occurred around 10:43 p.m., involved at least 15 vehicles and was caused by snow and ice on the roadway. Grand Rapids Police tell 13 ON YOUR SIDE a firetruck was among the vehicles involved in the incident, though no firefighters were hurt.

Emergency services responded quickly, and the highway was shut down at 11:08 p.m. While multiple people were transported to area hospitals, initial reports suggest that none of the injuries are considered serious.

Local road commissions urge drivers to exercise extreme caution during ongoing winter weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of reducing speed and maintaining increased following distance.

GRPD is continuing to investigate. Drivers are advised to check current road conditions and travel advisories before venturing out during winter storm warnings.

The highway was closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and ensure road safety. MDOT says it reopened at 2:30 a.m.
