17-year-old arrested in connection with attempted smoke shop break-in

The Kent County Sheriff's Office is searching for another suspect who was spotted running away from the tobacco shop overnight Monday.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Overnight Monday, the Kent County Sheriff's Office arrested a 17-year-old running away from a tobacco shop following an alarm.

It happened just after 2 a.m. in the 6600 block of Kalamazoo Avenue SE, the sheriff's office said.

Following the alarm, deputies spotted two suspects running away from the smoke shop at the rear of the business.

Assisting deputies tracked down one 17-year-old boy from Gaines Township.

He's now lodged in a juvenile detention center, and detectives are working on leads to find the other suspect. That person remains at large.

Authorities said they found pry marks at another vape shop just to the south of the original scene.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office said criminals continue to target tobacco and vape shops in West Michigan.
