BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A young man is injured after an officer-involved shooting in Battle Creek, police say.

Police say the shooting happened in the area of Dickman Road and Kendall Street around 3:15 p.m.

A man was apparently seen with a gun, possibly chasing someone, officials say.

Officers discovered the man was involved in a felonious assault with a handgun, where he pointed the gun at others. The man then ran from the scene.

Battle Creek investigators believe the suspect shot at an officer, and the officer returned fire, hitting him in the shoulder.

The officer was uninjured, but the 18-year-old suspect is receiving medical treatment. He is currently in custody.

Battle Creek officers say there is no video footage of the chase or the shooting.

The Michigan State Police are not in charge of the investigation, and the involved officer is on paid administrative leave, as is protocol.
