HESPERIA, Mich. — An 18-year-old man was flown to a Grand Rapids area hospital after a gun he was handling went off.

That's according to the Oceana County Sheriff's Office who said two men were shooting guns together around 9:30 p.m. Monday in the 8000 block of E. Filmore Road.

Some 911 callers said they heard several shots, and then another 911 caller asked for help.

Detectives believe the 18-year-old Newaygo County man with a gunshot wound to his abdomen was shooting firearms with his friend.

Investigators said one of them thought the gun was unloaded, and when the other person picked it up, the accidental discharge happened.

Authorities believe it was an accident.

EMS and other first responders took the man to the hospital to get treatment, and crews then flew him to a Grand Rapids-area hospital for treatment.

He is still listed in fair condition as of Tuesday morning.
