2 firefighters hurt in I-94 box truck crash

The Kalamazoo Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police are still investigating the crash. Once complete, the case will head to the prosecutor's office for review.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — Law enforcement shared an update on a harrowing crash on I-94 last week during icy road conditions.

On the morning of Thursday, Dec. 12, first responders were already tending to a rollover crash on I-94 near Sprinkle Road in Comstock Township when a box truck lost control.

The box truck slammed into three fire trucks and a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's cruiser before it rolled and came to rest.

Dashcam video from a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's deputy's cruiser shows the box truck skidding on I-94, and slamming into a fire truck. You can see firefighters run away toward the ditch to avoid getting struck.

Authorities initially said no first responders were hurt.

But an update on Monday indicated two Comstock firefighters needed treatment for their injuries.

One firefighter had a wrist injury, while another firefighter hurt his back.

The box truck driver had minor injuries, and two of the fire trucks had extensive damage.

The Kalamazoo Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police are still investigating the crash. Once complete, the case will head to the prosecutor's office for review.

If the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor decides to move forward with charges, the sheriff's office said they'd share the name of the box truck driver.
