GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Two firefighters were injured in a fire above Web Bar Tuesday evening.
According to the Grand Rapids Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 4:30 p.m. to a fire at the Web Bar. The fire was reported in the upstairs residence portion of the building, not in the Web Bar downstairs.
The department said when crews arrived they found heavy smoke and a large fire upstairs with people still evacuating the bar and the residences.
Firefighters believe the fire was wind-driven, which leads to high-heat situations and makes the fire harder to extinguish.
"Any time you get sustained winds, the fire itself will break windows," said Battalion Chief of the Grand Rapids Fire Department Richard Clark. "And when those windows finally let loose that wind is the same as when you fan a fire trying to get it going when you're building a campfire."
Two firefighters were sent to the hospital with injuries, but are expected to return to work this week and make a full recovery.
While the fire is under investigation, the department said it's not believed to be suspicious.
The residencies sustained heavy fire damage and the department said they assume the bar sustained heavy water damage due to the amount needed to put out the fire.
