2 men dead in crash into drainage ditch in Grant Township

The Newaygo County Sheriff's Office said they found a 22-year-old Fremont man and a 21-year-old Sparta man dead inside the SUV.

NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. — Two men from West Michigan were killed after the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office said an SUV rolled into a drainage ditch Thursday morning.

Sheriff Bob Mendham said deputies were called to E 110th and S Oak Avenue in Grant Township around 6 a.m. to a report of a vehicle upside down in a ditch.

When deputies made it to the scene, they found a Ford Escape upside down with two men trapped inside.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff identified the driver as a 21-year-old man from Sparta, and the passenger as a 22-year-old man from Fremont.

Deputies believe the SUV was westbound on E 110th when the driver tried to turn around in the road but instead went off the road and overturned into the drainage ditch.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by Grant Fire Department, Jerry's Towing, Life EMS, Mid Michigan Medical Examiners Group, and Newaygo County Central Dispatch.

The crash remains under investigation.
