Lansing Police Chief: 2 officers, suspect shot in exchange of gunfire

It wasn't clear who shot first. The Lansing Police Chief said both officers and the accused suspect are getting treatment for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

LANSING, Mich. — Two officers and a suspect were shot in Lansing around noon on Wednesday, according to the Lansing Police Department. 

The department said the shooting took place near Holmes Road and Simken Drive. Law enforcement is asking the public to avoid the area. 

The suspect is in custody, according to police. 

Lansing Police Chief Ellery Sosebee said two uniformed detectives were following up on a suspected crime in the area when they came in contact with the suspect behind an apartment complex. 

The chief said those officers called for backup. 

Authorities aren't yet sure who shot first but did say there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the two detectives. 

It appears all three were shot. They were all taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. 

The case is now in the hands of the Michigan State Police. 

While it wasn't immediately clear the nature of the investigation, nor the background of the suspect, Chief Sosebee did say, "We are familiar with the accused."
